Embark on the New Year with easy-to-achieve fitness goals that will help you get in shape and feel good.

As the New Year unfolds, so does the desire for a fresh start and healthier habits. But too often, resolutions to “get in shape” can feel overwhelming, making it tempting to give up after just a few weeks. The trick? Set small, achievable fitness goals that fit naturally into your lifestyle. These simple steps won’t require a massive time commitment or fancy equipment, but they’ll help you feel stronger, healthier and more energized as you step into the New Year.

1. Start Simple: Walk!

One of the easiest ways to get in shape is simply moving more throughout the day. We’ve all heard the 10,000-step goal, but that’s recently been exposed as more of an arbitrary number. Rather, aim for 15-20 minutes of a brisk walk around the block or on a treadmill. As it becomes a daily habit, increase it to 30 minutes or more, whatever fits your routine.

2. Incorporate Strength—No Gym Required

Building strength doesn’t mean hours spent at the gym. Start with bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups and sit-ups. These moves can be done anywhere and only require a few minutes, targeting core muscles to help you get stronger. Set a goal to complete two-to-three sessions per week, adding a few repetitions or a new exercise each month to keep it interesting. As you get stronger, pick up a couple 10-, 12- or 15-pound weights to hold while performing these exercises to increase your strength.

3. Focus on Real Food

Instead of overhauling your diet, start with one easy, healthy habit. This could be incorporating more vegetables into your meals, swapping sugary drinks for water or preparing a simple, nutritious breakfast every day. In addition, work on ditching processed foods and focus on whole foods and lean protein instead. Small, sustainable changes that you can commit to long-term will eventually add up to overall improved healthy eating.

4. Stay Hydrated

We often overlook hydration, but drinking water consistently throughout the day can improve energy levels and endurance. Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day to improve body function and get glowing skin. Start small, carrying a water bottle wherever you go, and consider adding a slice of lemon or cucumber for flavor or even a hydration, creatine or collagen boost for added health benefits.
