Temptation is everywhere during the holiday season. Clients bring in baked goods, sabotaging any hope of eating healthy. Longer workdays due to the holiday rush means less time at the gym (if we even get a chance to go at all). Running around shopping and going to a myriad of events means less time to cook a balanced meal. And the hope of only having a few drinks on the weekend can go out the window with endless parties and celebrations. Instead of giving in completely, here are a few ways to stay on-track this holiday season.

  1. Eat Breakfast
The most important meal of the day has several benefits. Eating breakfast in the morning can keep you energized throughout the day and keep you from crashing. Eating a healthy, well-balanced meal in the morning can also keep you feeling full, so you aren't tempted to eat several Christmas cookies instead.

  2. Drink Water
When you're feeling tired you may be tempted to reach for soda, coffee, or tea, but dehydration can be what's causing fatigue. Rehydrating can also lessen hunger pangs, so make sure and drink plenty of water between meals and clients as well. At holiday parties, make sure to alternate water between alcoholic beverages or choose sparkling water as a cocktail alternative so as not to get dehydrated.

  3. Get Some Sleep
There's a ton on our minds during this time of year, but sleep needs to be a priority. Aim to get at least seven hours of shut eye a night. Short power naps between clients or before heading out to an event can make all the difference in maintaining focus and boosting your immune system.

  4. Pop Some Peppermint
Research shows that peppermint, a popular seasonal flavor, can help you feel revitalized. Add a drop of peppermint essential oil to your water or diffuse it for some much-needed energy. Combat the cold with a cup of peppermint tea to ease digestion, help with sleep, and reduce tension.

  5. Meal Prep
We've all heard that failing to prepare is preparing to fail, which is why meal preparation should be a no-brainer during the holiday season when we often don't have time to cook. Begin each week by going grocery shopping and deciding on a menu and portion sizes. Cook and weigh ingredients to measure out to approximately 1/2-1/3 vegetables, 1/4 carbs or starches, 1/3 protein, and 1/8 fat.
